Stock Illustration

March 15th, 2011 § 1 Comment

“Stock” illustration or photography is a lot like (or basically is) clip art. Stock images are cheap and generic. Both qualities absolutely have a time and a place, but like the clip art that came with your Microsoft Word for Windows 95, both can go so, so wrong. Every visit to istockphoto.com leaves me (1) awed by how many skilled individuals there are (and how cheaply they will sell their work) and (2) positively horrified. My most recent visit searching for images of “lace” garnered two really nice examples of both the good and the hideous.

Example 1: cheap, generic, beautiful, simple

wedding dress

Example 2: cheap, generic, mind-bogglingly atrocious

the happy couple

If, like me, you saw this and thought, “Hey! What’s this artist’s problem? Why only white people??” Don’t worry. He’s got you covered:

all the happy couples
