79 Ideas – Decor blog

Santorini white abode

I’m pretty into every type of design, and even though the ones that involve paper are by far my favorites, I can really appreciate when someone does any of them well. I just came across 79 Ideas, a decor-centered blog with beautiful photos that feel light, airy, and whimsical with an attention to details and coloring.

I’ve never seen a recipe quite like this before. It’s a beautiful video, and it looks pretty yummy as well. (Originally seen on the Anthology magazine blog.)

Sensational. These guys are somewhere between dancers and magicians. I am so in love. They even have excellent fashion sense and taste in music to boot.

Canada, maybe?

Adrian was accepted into University of Toronto! We are so happy. We’re still waiting to hear back from The University of British Columbia, University of Maryland, and University of Denver. Depending on the offers that he receives, we could end up in any of those places, but now we at least know he’s definitely going to grad school in the fall!

The above image is from flickr of a U of T library. I really liked the photographer’s comment: “If I ever need to build a Fortress of Evil Superscience in retro-futurist style, I will shamelessly copy from this library.”

Stock Illustration

“Stock” illustration or photography is a lot like (or basically is) clip art. Stock images are cheap and generic. Both qualities absolutely have a time and a place, but like the clip art that came with your Microsoft Word for Windows 95, both can go so, so wrong. Every visit to istockphoto.com leaves me (1) awed by how many skilled individuals there are (and how cheaply they will sell their work) and (2) positively horrified. My most recent visit searching for images of “lace” garnered two really nice examples of both the good and the hideous.

Example 1: cheap, generic, beautiful, simple

wedding dress

Example 2: cheap, generic, mind-bogglingly atrocious

the happy couple

If, like me, you saw this and thought, “Hey! What’s this artist’s problem? Why only white people??” Don’t worry. He’s got you covered:

all the happy couples

Thoughts on culture

hipsters on bikes

A large part of Hipster culture has been focused on bikes as they are Alternative, customizable, counter-culture (at least in the States), and give one an instant jolt of self-righteousness. (Just to be clear, I don’t have a problem with any of these aspects or hipster culture itself, as most of my friends in recent years are some form of Hipster. I just delight in that for once I am familiar enough with a trend to understand it.) My interest in hipsterdom has subsided recently since I moved away from my college town and since my roommate is no longer dating bike messenger, but today I had a ground-breaking thought: will hipster/bike culture bring manpri’s to the public? I forgot that they used to be called pedal pushers. Hey older friends, did men ever wear this fashion or were they just for women? …I feel a gender revolution coming on.

mustaches are a musthave to maintan hipster culture

An aside: How serious am I about hipsters being my friends in Shepherdstown? I searched for “shepherdstown hipster” and on the first page this picture of homemade mustaches popped up from my friend Pang’s blog. Furthermore, her blog’s banner, that includes an owl, was done by some of my other trendy hipster artist friends.

PS Writing this made me kind of miss all those crazy kids back in West Virginia.

House Industries video

house industries

Hey, nerds. The illustrious House Industries released a video featuring their work and process. There are even clips of them actively drawing or painting lines — images that give me a feeling similar to watching someone swirl melted chocolate. WARNING: If you are not some sort of typophile, this will likely be super boring.
